A new locomotive for SOPOR
Baie-Comeau, November 7, 2023 | The Société du port ferroviaire de Baie-Comeau (SOPOR) is delighted to announce the arrival by train ferry of a brand-new locomotive at its Baie-Comeau facility on November 7.
Representing an investment of $695,000, the CP 7306 diesel-electric locomotive, model EMD GP-38-2, was purchased in the fall of 2022. SOPOR deliberately chose to prioritize the restoration of a locomotive belonging to a major railway company, rather than a new engine. “It’s an optimal solution both environmentally – since we’re recovering an existing engine and refurbishing it to reduce its environmental footprint in the future – and financially,” says Cédric Bérubé, General Manager of SOPOR.
Over the past few months, the locomotive, now called SOPX 7306, was inspected by a specialized workshop in Ontario, where it underwent a major overhaul, complete maintenance and a new paint job in the colours of SOPOR. The refurbishment of this locomotive, whose model is renowned in North America for its reliability, enabled it to be fitted with several systems, including:
SOPOR would like to highlight the work of its team and board of directors in this project, and to thank the Ontario Northland workshop team and Brian Lavigne of Northern Plains Rail Services for their support and contribution.
