FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Baie-Comeau, May 8, 2018. – SOPOR, the Société du port ferroviaire de Baie-Comeau – Hauterive, would like to inform Baie-Comeau residents of an increase in the number of trains passing over the level crossing on Boulevard Comeau, near the intersection of Boulevard La Salle and the Sûreté du Québec building. The increase will start in the coming weeks and remain in effect for an indeterminate period of time. Major repair work undertaken in the St. Lawrence Seaway and in the SOPOR shunting yard by the MTMDET (Ministry of Transport, Sustainable Mobility and Transportation Electrification) mean some transhipment and railway operations must be transferred to another location in Jean-Noël-Tessier Industrial Park.

The Boulevard Comeau crossing has flashing lights, sounding bells and barriers and is synchronized with nearby traffic lights. SOPOR reminds drivers and pedestrians to obey the warning devices and to approach level crossings with caution. When the lights are flashing and the bells ringing, they must wait behind the stop line. Do not proceed until the lights and bells have stopped, the barrier has been raised and the train has passed. Wait until all warning signals have stopped and the barriers are fully raised and check that no other train is coming before starting to cross.

Trains will pass intermittently, between 2 and 6 times per day, 7 days a week, blocking the road for anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes. When the MTMDET work is complete, for safety reasons, SOPOR may keep on using the transhipment site in Jean-Noël-Tessier Industrial Park. This means that trains will continue to pass more frequently than before over the level crossing on Boulevard Comeau.
